The Cariboo occurrence is located on the southeast flank of Barkerville Mountain, 1.6 kilometres west-northwest of Barkerville.

The Cariboo showing encompasses several clusters of workings (opencuts and one caved adit) described by G. Hanson (Geological Survey of Canada Memoir 181, page 26) on the Cariboo, Marie and Martha claims. These workings targeted a system of quartz veins that are hosted by phyllitic quartzites of the Upper Proterozoic-Paleozoic Snowshoe Group on the southeast flank of Barkerville Mountain. Some veins are well mineralized with pyrite, and others contain pyrite and galena. A sample taken from a vein on the Martha claim assayed 56.23 grams per tonne gold and 53.49 grams per tonne silver (Bulletin 1, page 62).

In 2012, channel sampling of trenches yielded up to 5.82 grams per tonne gold over 10.8 metres and 26.13 grams per tonne gold over 12.75 metres (Dzick, W. (2015-03-31): Cow Mountain NI43-101 Technical Report).

In the early 1920s, intensive prospecting by E.E. Armstrong was conducted on the Myrtle group (093H 025) located about 570 metres to the northwest of the Cariboo. In 1933, Newmont Mining Corporation did some stripping on the Myrtle group and Shamrock Gold Mines Limited drove the Shamrock adit 548 metres toward the downward projection of some veins on the surface of that group. The Shamrock adit was driven west from the portal on the outskirts of Barkerville. In 1941, Island Mountain Mines Company Limited purchased the Myrtle and that part of the Shamrock group which included the adit, and in 1941-42, drove the adit to the Martha (Lot 10508) and Cariboo (Lot 10512) claims, over a kilometre from the portal. The adit was driven toward the Martha (Lot 10508), Marie (Lot 10502), and Myrtle (Lot 10501) claims but did not reach the latter two. Many transverse veinlets were encountered on the southwest side of the Martha claim. In 1955, the Shamrock property included the Shamrock and Myrtle groups consisting of nineteen Crown-granted claims and fractions and was owned by Island Mountain Mining Company Limited.

In 2015, Barkerville Gold Mines Ltd. discovered a new high-grade gold horizon (the KL horizon) 500 metres east of the Bonanza Ledge open pit (093H 140) and subparallel to the B.C. Vein (093H 139), with multiple mineralized veins identified. The location of the new KL horizon was identified by previous operators by a marked, auriferous soil anomaly and was subsequently exposed by mechanical stripping in 2012. Surface sampling of the exposed bedrock yielded grab assays up to 167.42 grams per tonne gold in an undrilled swarm of sulphide bearing quartz veins. The first pass of the 2015 Phase I drilling has outlined the horizon over a strike length of 60 metres and to a vertical depth of 120 metres. The KL Horizon remains open at depth and along strike and is interpreted to represent a previously unidentified auriferous structure. Diamond-drill holes BGM-15-022 through BGM-15-027 were designed to test the area devoid of historic drilling in the newly discovered KL Horizon. Significant assays include 6.39 grams per tonne gold over 7.3 metres (including 15.63 grams per tonne over 1.05 metres; 13.90 grams per tonne over 0.6 metre; 15.09 grams per tonne over 1.25 metres) in drillhole BGM-15-024 (Press Release – Barkerville Gold Mines Ltd., September 15, 2015).

In 2019, a diamond drill hole (BM-19-005) located on Barkerville Mountain in the Cariboo occurrence area yielded 19.3 grams per tonne gold over 6.3 metres true width, including 69.4 grams per tonne gold over 0.5 metres true width (Morgan, G.J. (2019-09-17): NI 43-101 Technical Report - Preliminary Economic Assessment of the Cariboo Gold Project).
